Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Still not sure whether a vinyl floor is the right option for you? Have a look at our list of frequently asked questions (FAQ). The questions are divided into three categories.

If you don't find the answer you were looking for, please contact us.

One of the main advantages, next to offer a great price/quality, is the hygienic aspect of this type of floor. It's the ideal floor for homes with families or people with allergies.

Another great advantage is that it replicates the real natural look of wood and tiles, without the disadvantages (such as hard to clean and maintain) or cost of the material.

Vinyl floors are also one of the easiest types of flooring to self-install, and vinyl flooring can last over a very long time.

Vinyl is not a natural material, but a synthetic man-made type of plastic. It is made from ethylene (found in crude oil) and chlorine (found in regular salt). When processed, these substances are combined to form Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) resin, commonly referred to as vinyl.

It was originally invented in 1920 by scientists who wanted to develop a material that was more durable and cheaper than what was available at the time.

Vinyl flooring is one of the most common applications of vinyl.

PVC floor coverings are classified as antistatic or static-dissipative depending on their electrical resistance, both surface resistivity and volume resistivity.

In order to be installed in areas where there is sensitive electrical equipment, the resistance of a floorcovering must be no greater than ca 107Ω.

To be installed in an environment where there are flammable gases, the floor covering must have a resistance of no more than 105Ω. In both cases special installation techniques must be used. Measured against EN 1081 Beauflor resilient vinyl has a surface and volume resistance of between 1011Ω and 1012Ω and is not suitable for installations of this type.

We distinguish 2 types of vinyl flooring: homogeneous and heterogeneous vinyl flooring.

Homogeneous vinyl is made of one single layer that offers vibrant and deep colours. Heterogeneous vinyl is a multi-layer flooring. This allows to create the look and feel of natural flooring materials.

Beauflor® produces heterogeneous vinyl, both as cushion vinyl rolls as well as vinyl planks.

Cushion vinyl rolls consist of large sheets of vinyl, available in sizes 2, 3, 4 or even 5 meters wide. We recommend for cushion vinyl to be glued to the subfloor by a professional installer. Looselay is possible up to 20 m² or even up to 40 m² with our Tex Collection.

Beauflor® also produces vinyl planks (also called Luxury Vinyl Tiles or LVT) in varying plank and tile dimensions. These planks can be clicked together or glued down to your subfloor.

The decision between cushion vinyl rolls or vinyl planks should be based on the type of environment the vinyl floor will be installed in, the level of traffic it will have to endure and the wear and tear that it will be exposed to and the level of expertise needed for installation.

Things to consider:

1. Pattern and design

Because a vinyl floor made up of cushion vinyl consists of one or two large sheets, you won’t have to pay attention to the pattern on the floor when the floor is installed. While vinyl planks give you the option to get creative and create your own pattern during the installation. You can even mix and match different plank designs!

2. Damage

If one of your click vinyl planks is damaged or permanently scratched, it is fairly easy to replace that plank with a new one. With cushion vinyl rolls this is not possible. The vinyl sheets are glued to the floor and need to be replaced as a whole.

3. Water or moist resistant

Both cushion vinyl rolls and vinyl planks are resistant tot moisture, so ideal to install in your bathroom or kitchen. With cushion vinyl rolls, the entire floor surface is covered, which eliminates the chance of water accidentally seeping through and causing damage to your subfloor.

4. Ease of installation

You don’t need to be an expert to install a click vinyl planks floor in your home. With our DreamClick locking system, you can lay your floor perfectly in no time. To install cushion vinyl rolls, we advise you to work with a professional installer. The rolls need to be cut precisely and glued to the floor. Working with a professional ensures you a neat and durable installation.

If you are looking for a durable floor that is easy to clean, silent and comfortable to walk on, then vinyl is the right floor for your home.

You can install a vinyl floor anywhere: in the kitchen, bathroom, living room, bedroom or hallway. Beauflor® has an extensive collection, so you are sure to find a design that matches your taste and the rest of your interior. Because of its quiet underfoot vinyl is sound absorbing, which makes it ideal for apartments or upstairs bedrooms.

Yes, we offer vinyl floors with a high wear layer, which are perfectly suited for use in commercial/profession environments.

Vinyl is an environmentally friendly material. 57% of vinyl is made from common salt, which is a renewable natural substance. Non-replenishable resources, such as crude oil only account for 43% of vinyl resin. In comparison to various other materials used by the flooring industry, vinyl requires less natural resources, utilises less energy to manufacture and also releases lower emissions into the environment.

On top of that, vinyl is a material that can last for decades. And when its lifetime is nearing an end, the material can be recycled. Our Podium vinyl planks are 100% recyclable.

All Beauflor® vinyl floors are suitable to be used in combination with underfloor heating systems, given that the heating system has been installed properly.

The heating system should never allow to exceed a surface temperature of 27°C. In case of electrical floor heating, we advise not to exceed 60W/m2. For more detailed instructions, please read our installation manual.

All Beauflor® vinyl floors are water resistant and suitable for installation in bathrooms and kitchens.

Our vinyl planks resist moisture thanks to their vinyl top layer and the RCB base board. On top of that, some cushion vinyl rolls and vinyl planks have a PU lacquer top layer that increases durability and easy maintenance.

In the unlikely event that water has seeped through your cushion vinyl floor, lift the vinyl and make sure the subfloor can dry properly. If not, the trapped water can cause mould, bad odours and discolouration of the floor.

No, vinyl floors do not need waxing. Unlike hardwood or tile floors, there is no special treatment required for vinyl. For information on vinyl maintenance, check our Installation and Maintenance page.

Yes, but only if the rugs have been labeled as 'colourfast' by the manufacturer. It is also recommended to use non-staining polypropylene backed mats or woven rugs. Do not use rubber or latex backed mats, as long-lasting contact with rubber can permanently stain your floor.

Cushion vinyl rolls consist of large sheets of vinyl on rolls, available in sizes 2, 3, 4 or even 5 metres wide. Cushion vinyl is glued to the subfloor.

A roll of cushion vinyl consists of multiple layers that add to its durability. (Note: every vinyl roll product can be different: please check the technical datasheets for more detailed information)

Cushion vinyl consists of the following elements:

  • Backing (+ a felt backing for some products)
  • Glass fiber interlayer
  • Print layer
  • Foam layer
  • Impregnation layer
  • Wear layer on top of the print layer
  • An optional PU lacquer to increase the durability and hygiene

You can install cushion vinyl almost everywhere: in the living room, bedroom or even in bathrooms, kitchens and basements. However, some adhesives used for installation are water-soluble and should not be exposed to water for an extended period of time.

For full information on installing cushion vinyl rolls, please check our installation guide here.

The best way to calculate how much vinyl you need, is to measure the size of the room and add an additional 5 to 10% to cover any irregularities or shortages (by cutting up the vinyl for corners for example).

Our rolls come in widths of 2, 3, 4 and even 5 metres. Depending on the size of the room, this should generally allow you to create a seamless floor.

Someone with experience in installing floors can install cushion vinyl himself. However, we advise to contact a professional installer to get a perfect result and a high-quality installation.

Please check our installation instructions for additional information.

In the unlikely event that water has seeped through to the subfloor, make sure to lift the vinyl and let the subfloor dry out completely.

Water standing on the surface of your vinyl floor can occasionally cause it to turn a little white. This effect is reversible: as soon as the water has been removed and the surface has dried, the floor returns to its normal state.

In case your water is “hard water”, the white discolouration is likely to be due to a buildup of limescale. You can remove the limescale with any liquid bathroom cleaning product designed to remove limescale. Do not use an abrasive cream, as this could damage the floor.

Vinyl planks or luxury vinyl tiles (LVT) are a multi-layered flooring material. The Beauflor® Podium collection offers vinyl planks of excellent quality in a variety of contemporary designs, that resemble the look of natural materials like wood or stone.

The planks consist of several layers, each with a specific function:

  • The revolutionary RCB (Rigid Composite Board) base board of our planks guarantees stability and firmness. RCB allows for installation on top of any existing hard floor with little or no subfloor preparation.
  • An acoustic vinyl decor layer that ensures the best sound reduction on the market.
  • The wear layer makes our vinyl planks very durable and suitable for areas with high traffic. You never have to worry about placing heavy furniture on your Podium floor.
  • The top layer consist of PU protective lacquer to make your vinyl planks scratch resistant and waterproof.

Beauflor® Podium vinyl planks are revolutionary and use number of innovative technologies:

  • Our vinyl planks are great noise reducers in your home. They absorb up to 50% more sound than other LVT floors. This makes Podium floors ideal for apartments or bedrooms upstairs. Podium has the best sound absorption on the market.
  • Thanks to the DreamClick locking system, any Podium floor can be installed in no time. The 4-sided identical locks on the planks allow you to install them a lot faster than with traditional click systems.
  • Podium vinyl planks can be installed on almost any subfloor or even directly on top of an existing tile floor, thanks to our advanced RCB technology (Rigid Composite Board).

Installing Podium click vinyl planks is very easy, thanks to our DreamClick® locking system.

For GlueDown vinyl planks you need a perfectly even subfloor. Working with a professional ensures a perfect and high-quality installation.

Our vinyl plank floors are tested according to the stringent European standard EN 14041 tests. The minimum score that must be achieved in this test is “E”, and we are proud to say that Podium floors achieve a “B” score.

Placing heavy objects, like bookcases or wardrobes on Podium floors is no problem, provided that the subfloor is resistant to pressure. A proper subfloor retains its thickness and pressure resistance over time. Make sure to avoid point loads (a heavy load resting on one point) on your vinyl planks floor.
The installation of the floor must be the last operation in the project. Kitchen cabinets, fireplaces, etc., cannot be installed on top of the flooring.

The RCB or Rigid Composite Board is the base board of Podium vinyl planks. It gives the planks an exceptional rigidity and stability and also reduces their weight considerably. This makes the planks easier to carry and move around during transport and installation.

Beauflor® vinyl planks can be installed on almost any hard subfloor, like wood, concrete or tile.

You can install the click vinyl planks directly on top of an existing tile floor thanks to the leveling properties of the RCB base board.

Podium GlueDown vinyl planks can be installed on hard flooring provided that you prepare your subfloor adequately: clean the working area and clear away any debris, which could potentially damage finished floor panel fitting. The subfloor must be clean, flat, dry, smooth and stable.

For more detailed information about suitable subfloors please read our installation manuals.

Our vinyl plank floors comply with and even exceed all the European health requirements for indoor air quality: they carry the labels: E1 (Europe), A+ (France) and U (Germany).

On top of that, Podium vinyl planks are suited for people with allergies. A floor that has been installed perfectly is easy to clean and won’t have dust cling to it. Dust mites or other allergy-causing organisms do not survive on a clean and well-maintained Podium floor.

In order to keep your floor properly cleaned, it is important to use cleaning products that do not contain wax or form sticky layers that attract dust. We advise you to use our vinyl planks cleaner for regular maintenance of your vinyl planks floor.

Thanks to the DreamClick® locking system, any Podium floor can be installed in no time. The 4-sided identical locks are faster to install than traditional click systems. You can start the next row right where you finished the previous row.

With this system you can have several installers working simultaneously on the same floor to speed things up.

On top of that, the planks can be clicked together on all sides, so you can start the installation in any direction and create any floor pattern you can think of!

Yes, but do take the following into account:

  1. Use soft non-rubber wheels. Rolling office chairs, furniture legs, fitness appliances, … should be fitted with non-rubber casters, to avoid permanent damage on your floor. Use soft, non-rubber felt protector pads under the feet of furniture and chair legs.
  2. Place a modified transparent mat under your chair to increase the life of your Podium floor and keep it better looking for a longer time.
  3. Rubber can permanently damage the vinyl, so make sure to avoid rubber wheels, rubber furniture legs or mats with a rubber lining. Long-lasting contact with rubber can cause permanent damage to your vinyl planks floor.

The hard top coating of all Podium vinyl planks is scratch resistant, according to European regulations. This does not mean that the floor is scratch proof though!

Sharp objects can scratch the floor, so take the following into account:

  • Use a non-rubber doormat or entrance mat to reduce the risk of sharp objects like sand or little stones coming into the house. Do not use rubber-backed mats, as long-lasting contact with rubber can cause permanent stains.
  • Place protective felt pads under furniture legs (chairs, tables, cabinets, etc.).
  • The wheels and nozzle of your vacuum cleaner should not have sharp edges or be too hard, and should rotate freely.

It’s perfectly possible to have pets and keep your vinyl planks floor beautiful at the same time. Our Podium floors are easy to clean, so dirt from paws or hairs can be swiped away easily.

Although our vinyl planks are scratch resistant, they are not scratch proof. Minimize the possibility of scratches by regularly cutting the nails of your pets.

Immediately after installation, clean your vinyl planks floor thoroughly. To keep your floor in good condition, place doormats at all entrances to eliminate the risk of scratches from sand, dust or grind that stick to the soles of your shoes.

Beauflor® vinyl floors are designed to last, but to ensure that your floor stays at its best, clean your floor regularly.

The proper cleaning routine is easy: wipe away dust with an ordinary broom, microfibre cloth or vacuum cleaner and clean the floor with a damp mop and regular cleaning products. Spills and stains should be wiped up as they happen.

We advise against using aggressive cleaning products or steam cleaners. Also avoid letting puddles of water stand on the surface after cleaning.

The protective PU finish of the wear layer eliminates the need for any special treatment, but over time a polymeric dispersion or a PU gloss polish may help to keep your floor looking gorgeous.

For more detailed information, please read our maintenance instructions.

All that is required is an occasional sweep with a wet mob and standard cleaning products.

Podium Vinyl planks can be installed much faster than any other floor, thanks to their levelling properties.

Almost any subfloor will do. You can install Podium directly on top an an existing tile floor, without print-through of the tile joints. Other suitable subfloors: surfaces with small residues of glue and ordinary screed. All this is made possible thanks to our advanced RCB technology (Rigid Composite Board). No dust, no mess, just cut the planks into the right size with a Stanley knife.
